VMIX Featured on VideoNuze.com

July 21, 2008

VMIX has been around since 2005, and has built a healthy roster of customers, mainly, but not exclusively in the local media space. Operating purely as a white-label SaaS provider, its CORE media management platform now powers over 200 sites' video and multimedia offerings, reaching 60 million+ unique visitors/mo. Examples are regional sites such as McClatchy's KansasCity.com, Lee Enterprises' StlToday.com and Landmark's HamptonRoads.com along with others such as American Cancer Society's SharingHope.tv.

Given how crowded the space is, I'm always interested in how video platform companies articulate their points of differentiation. In this case Mike outlined several ways starting with the idea that VMIX's sale focuses on revenue generation for local media companies, rather than technology adoption.

Viral Corporate Videos

Combining user-generated content with commercial content, VMIX lets videographers upload promo videos for their clients as well as their own creative content.

San Diego's Jim Staylor of Staylor-Made Productions uses VMIX to market his $29.95 instructional DVD, How to Keep Your Do-It-Yourself-Video from Looking Like You Did It Yourself. He has ten clips ranging from 30 to 60 seconds in length that correspond to chapters on the DVD. He created a channel on VMIX that lets users view the clips sequentially or in any order they wish. About two weeks after Staylor posted these promo clips to VMIX, he sold 14 copies of his DVD to one customer. In addition to the income he gets from selling his instructional DVDs, the expert cachet he's accrued has encouraged clients to hire him for video productions.

Tribune Mixes It Up

January 30, 2007 |By Tom Taulli, AOL Money & Finance

I had a chance to talk to Greg Kostello, who is the CEO and founder of VMIX. According to him:

"Forward-looking newspapers like Tribune are combining the best of the interactive and participatory nature of the web with the value of providing first-rate news for their readership. They are leveraging their built-in regional community and providing the kind of online experience that people have come to expect. This means not just consuming news but interacting with it, responding to it, and even providing content for that community. Video and media sharing is one of the key factors. It helps drive community by allowing people to share their stories. "

Papers to let visitors post content online

A key feature to VMIX's platform is a filtering system that blocks pornography, obscenities and unauthorized copyrighted material from being posted by users on the newspapers' Web sites. Kostello said VMIX is paid a license fee and also is paid based on usage. He declined to say how much the company expects to make from the service.
